07.02.2003, Warszawa
During his stay in Los Angeles, Prime Minister Leszek Miller met with representatives of thePolish Community of the U.S. West Coast and representatives of Jewish communities, and at the prestigious Council for World Relations he delivered a lecture on transatlantic cooperation and on Poland's potential role therein. The Polish Community on the West Coast, consisting primarily of people of science, culture and business, gave the Polish Prime Minister their views on our country's policy towards émigré Poles. The Prime Minister's guests includedsuch people from the world of culture as Barbara Krafftówna, Jadwiga Baranska, Jerzy Antczak and Jerzy Skolimowski.
During the meeting with representatives of the local elites, the concept of a Museum of the History of Polish Jews was presented. The Prime Minister also met Adrien Brody, who played the leading role in Roman Polanski's film "The Pianist", and later, in Hollywood, he met with Andrzej Szpilman, son of the hero of the events portrayed in the film. "It was very moving to meet the son of the famous Polish composer, whose memoirs inspired Polanskis film The Pianist," said Prime Minister Miller. "Wladyslaw Szpilman's history is another example of how very tightly intertwined Polish-Jewish fates have been."

That evening, Miller met with representatives of the Jewish population. The meeting was an opportunity to present the design of the History of Polish Jews Museum, to be erected in Warsaw. Jerzy Halbersztadt, who presented the design, told journalists that construction work was scheduled to commence in 2004. Construction will take three to four years and the cost of the entire project is estimated at $60 million.

Press release of International Publishers Association
from 21.4.2004
"The Pianist" banned
Metin Celal, Secretary General of the Turkish Publishers Association, gave examples of contradiction between the legislative reforms and the practice in real life. He stated that although the film Pianist, which secured an Oscar Award for actor Adrian Brody, was freely shown in Turkish cinemas, the Turkish translation of the book version of the movie was banned on the grounds of obscenity. In a similar controversy, Turkish translation of Marquis de Sades book Philosophy in the Bedroom was banned over 200 years after its first appearance.
Freedom of Expression Lawyer Fikret Ilkiz emphasized the positive constitutional amendments and the particular impact of these provisions on freedom of expression. However, he made clear that the changes in law concerning the print press, newspaper, radio and television broadcast were still in sharp conflict with freedom of expression. In particular, the fines imposed on the basis of these laws are far too high, even after the latest legislative modifications. Consequently, newspapers, radio or television stations still face the risk of bankruptcy. He also said that Article 7 of the Anti-Terror Law and Articles 426 and 427 of the Turkish Penal Code were weapons frequently used by the Turkish authorities to limit the exercise of freedom of expression in the country. In the future, the implementation of the new laws will have to be assured at the administrative level if freedom of expression is to progress in every day life.
